“True” FOV fills your vision exactly like real life. Many players prefer +5–10° above true for awareness.

What is true FOV?

Your true FOV is the field of view that makes the game world appear exactly life-size on your screen — computed from your screen’s physical width and how far your eyes sit from it. Set your game’s FOV near this value and distances, speeds, and aim will feel natural.

Why most players use more than true FOV

True FOV for a 27″ monitor at 60 cm is around 75° vertical — but most FPS players run 90–110° horizontal equivalent. A wider FOV shows more of your surroundings (better awareness) at the cost of smaller, harder-to-hit targets. Competitive players usually split the difference: true FOV + 5–10°.

Horizontal vs vertical FOV

Games label FOV differently — some use horizontal, some vertical, some a 4:3-based scale. Our calculator shows both, so you can translate any game’s setting correctly. When converting between games, match the same type of FOV.

How to measure viewing distance

Sit naturally, then measure from your eyes to the screen surface in centimeters. 50–70 cm is typical for desktop. Re-measure if you change chairs or monitor arms — a few centimeters shift the result.

FOV Calculator FAQs

What FOV do pros use?

Most FPS pros use 90–110° horizontal equivalent (roughly 68–80° vertical at 16:9). Very few run maximum FOV — the target-shrinking tradeoff isn’t worth it.

Does higher FOV cause motion sickness?

Wrong FOV can. If a game makes you queasy, your FOV is probably far from your true FOV — calculate it here and move toward it.

Why does my game look ‘zoomed’ after changing FOV?

Going from high to true FOV feels zoomed for a day or two. Give it 2–3 sessions before judging — your brain adapts.

Does FOV affect aim?

Indirectly. Higher FOV makes targets smaller (harder to hit) but shows more area. Find the widest FOV where your aim doesn’t suffer.
